Pre Operative instructions for General Anaesthesia or IV Sedation

  • Have nothing to eat or drink after midnight on the evening prior to your surgery. Water only may be taken up to 3 hours before surgery. Failure to comply with these instructions will result in the cancellation of your surgery for your own safety
  • You must have a responsible adult with you to drive you home at the end of your surgery and look after you for the rest of the day. Do not plan to drive, ride transit or walk home alone after a general anesthetic or IV sedation
  • On the day of your surgery, your ride should come in with you to go over postop instructions, then they may leave and return to pick you up when ready
  • Unless specifically directed otherwise by us, please take all your regular medications as usual (even on the morning of the procedure) with a small sip of water only. The only medications that may need to be held or altered are diabetes medications, blood-thinning medications, or bisphosphonate medications. Contact us if you have questions about your particular situation
  • It is okay (and encouraged) to brush your teeth the morning of surgery
  • No alcohol, no smoking/vaping, and no marijuana or other drugs for 24 hours before your surgery (for your own safety)
  • Wear loose fitting clothing (pants and short sleeves ) and minimal make-up. Avoid high heels and coloured/gel nail polish. Please remove contact lenses and all jewellery, especially from the tongue, lip, or nose
  • It is a requirement that all patients sign a consent form. Patients under 18 years old must arrive accompanied by parent(s) or a legal guardian who will sign the consent form
  • If you have a cold/cough or any symptoms of COVID-19, please notify our office immediately for further instructions. We may need to reschedule your appointment
  • Please notify us as soon as possible if you cannot keep your surgery appointment. Failure to provide 7 days notice may result in a cancellation fee
